This morning, Xiaomi announced that the Xiaomi 13 series and 10G routers will be upgraded to a new generation of Wi-Fi 7. This is a new generation of wireless network standards after Wi-Fi 6/6E.

Compared with the current wireless network, WiFi7 is faster, more stable, has a lower latency, wider coverage, and is comprehensively stronger.

Wi-Fi 7 advantages

Wi-Fi 7 is IEEE 802.11be. The new feature is that it supports 320MHz bandwidth, 4096-QAM modulation, MRU/MLO, and other cutting-edge technologies.

The first advantage is the network speed. Although the theoretical network speed of Wi-Fi 6 can reach 9.6Gbps, most of those routers provide only 1.2Gbps speed at present. Wi-Fi 7 can theoretically reach 33Gbps, but in fact, it will not be so high. With Xiaomi 10G router, it can achieve 4.3Gbps, which is far faster than the current Wi-Fi network.

The speed of Wi-Fi 6 is already very fast. But many people still couldn’t have a good experience. This is the problem of signal interference. Although Wi-Fi 6 has a bandwidth of 160MHz (8 x 20MHz bandwidth), it is easy to interfere, resulting in reduced bandwidth to 40MHz.

Wi-Fi 7 comes with an improved anti-interference ability. Even if there is interference, it can still form a 120Mhz bandwidth to ensure the speed.

In addition, Wi-Fi 7 also has a bunch of technical upgrades, such as dynamic narrow band, up to 240MHz bandwidth, and so on.

What about the Xiaomi 13?

In December last year, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun issued a document confirming that the Xiaomi 13 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7. But China hadn’t opened Wi-Fi 7 certification yet.

Both the smartphone and the router should support the Wi-Fi 7 function before being used normally. Thus, the company has to push an OTA update. So users who own either the Xiaomi 10 Gigabit routers or the Xiaomi 13 smartphones should wait for an official notification from the company.

According to Xiaomi, based on Qualcomm FastConnect 7800, with the support of 5G+5G high-frequency concurrent multi-connection technology, Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro can achieve an ultra-high theoretical rate of up to 4.3Gbps, while also improving energy efficiency by 30%-50%.

The first Xiaomi 10G router

In December 2022, Xiaomi’s first 10G router was officially released. In addition to the two 10G ports, the Xiaomi 10G router also has four 2.5G WAN/LAN adaptive network ports and a USB 3.0 interface.

The total rate of routing tri-band concurrent is as high as 10023.6Mbps, and 2.4G/5.2G/5.8G all support 4×4, 4K QAM modulation, and 5.2GHz supports 160MHz bandwidth.

Redmi K60 Pro is in the game as well

After the announcement by Xiaomi, Redmi issued its own statement, saying that the Redmi K60 Pro would also upgrade the new generation of Wi-Fi 7 standard.

We also have to recall that the Redmi K60 comes with the Snapdragon 8+ processor, and the K60 Pro comes with the second-generation Snapdragon 8. So the K60 has no chance to upgrade to Wi-Fi 7. The reason is that the second-generation Snapdragon 8 has added Wi-Fi 7 support through the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 and Snapdragon X70 5G modem and RF system. As you guess, they lack the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

FastConnect 7800 fully supports all the features of Wi-Fi 7. It supports three major frequency bands of 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz. At the same time, it supports high-frequency multi-connection concurrent technology, 4-way dual-band and features extended to high-frequency bands, and 4K QAM modulation technology. It is up to 5.8Gbps, which is 60% higher than the previous generation.

In areas where the 6GHz frequency band is not available (such as China), the 160MHz and 80MHz of the 5GHz frequency band will turn into a 240MHz bandwidth.
