Google recently added the feature to use a mobile phone as a desktop or laptop webcam in the Android 14 system. This feature caught the attention of technology media testers.
Apple introduced the “Continuity Camera” feature, allowing you to employ your iPhone as a Mac webcam. It utilizes a powerful camera system to achieve effects beyond the capabilities of typical webcams.
In the Android 14 system, users must connect their mobile phone and PC via a USB data cable and select the “Webcam” option. The phone needs to support USB Video Class (UVC) to function as a webcam on platforms like Windows, Linux, and macOS. Presently, this feature has limitations, offering only 720P resolution and producing blurry images.
Testers observed that the results worsened when using a 2x cropped view, and there were no additional improvements to Android 14’s webcam.
In contrast, Apple’s Continuity Camera includes a Center Stage mode that uses AI to automatically detect a person’s position and keeps them in the center of the screen by moving and zooming the lens. In rare cases where there’s no suitable subject in the frame, the live video may become blurry and lose focus.
