The vice president of Xiaomi’s mobile phone department and the general manager of the robot division discussed the market and technological maturity of the Xiaomi CyberDog 2 on August 18 in an interview. He predicted the CyberDog 2 price would go below 5,000 yuan (about $690) as the industrial chain matures.

Just four days earlier, on August 14, Xiaomi introduced the latest robot dog, Xiaomi CyberDog 2, at a press conference. CyberDog 2 showed significant advancements compared to the Iron Egg 1.0 CyberDog 1 launched two years ago. It had improved bionic features, was 16% smaller, and weighed almost 40% less.

Following this, Xiaomi displayed this new creation at the World Robot Conference. Attendees observed the notable hardware maturity of the Xiaomi CyberDog 2, sparking a strong push for its commercialization. However, in terms of intelligence, the robot dog remained somewhat underdeveloped. It couldn’t perform complex action sequences or intricate language-based tasks.

The Vice president projected that the next two to three years would focus on refining and enhancing the robot dog’s hardware and application capabilities. The goal was to improve the product. He stated that although robot dogs had moved beyond academic environments to broader interests, there was a gap between their current utility and potential.

Xiaomi’s strategy targeted developers as the main audience, aiming to collaboratively nurture an ecosystem. Expectations leaned toward the gradual introduction of robot dogs into the consumer (To C) market in the next 2-3 years. This progression relied on the maturation of the industrial chain and subsequent cost reduction. The Vice president suggested that the robot dog’s price could go below 5,000 yuan as the chain matured.
