On June 26th, Gizcoupon reported that Tesla had initiated a recall for certain 2023 models of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the United States. The reason for this action is that there may be a malfunction with the pyrotechnic battery disconnect. This device is responsible for disconnecting the high-voltage battery in the event of a collision or battery-related issues, ensuring safety.

Gizcoupon reports that approximately 26 vehicles are affected by this recall, with an estimated 2% of them having been installed with pyrotechnic battery disconnect, as indicated in the safety recall report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA’s safety recall report reveals that Tesla identified a malfunctioning pyrotechnic battery disconnect during a validation test on April 20th, 2023, Beijing time. Following this discovery, the company and the device’s supplier, Joyson Safety Systems, initiated an investigation on April 26th, Beijing time.

By the end of May, Tesla and Joyson completed their investigation, uncovering a supplier’s traceability system flaw. This flaw resulted in the pyrotechnic battery disconnect device being mistakenly sent to Tesla on April 20th, 2023, Beijing time. Subsequently, Tesla conducted a risk assessment and voluntarily initiated the recall process to address this issue. As of now, Tesla has not received any warranty claims or reports of failures related to this problem.

Due to the hardware issue with this Tesla Model 3 and Model Y recall. Therefore the company cannot resolve it through Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. The company has stated that it will replace the pyrotechnic battery disconnect for the affected vehicles free of charge.
