After placing iPhones in the locker, they update to the latest iOS version within 15 to 30 minutes. Now, iGeneration has released a follow-up blog, elucidating the pertinent details of the Apple Store “Presto” system. According to them, the “Presto” system operates on a Mac mini. Technicians scan iPhone boxes, adding the phones to the queue for updates. The system notifies staff about remaining updates. Additionally, it checks daily sales records to determine the number of phones needing preparation for the next day.

The queue also lists inventory iPhones needing updates, considering store sales forecasts to select which iPhones need retrieval for processing. Throughout the day, the team stays informed about the number of iPhones slated for Presto processing and which ones have already undergone the process. When a customer purchases a specific SKU (such as a particular iPhone model, storage, and color), the system prompts employees to update another SKU.

This ensures that there’s always at least one latest model in stock for any customer’s preference. Upon arrival of new iPhones, the Presto system tags the current iOS version of the iPhones. After a new iOS update goes live, the system automatically tags all inventory needing updates. iGeneration notes that all employees can participate in this process, even without specialized Presto training. Once the phone update is complete, the LED status indicator changes from white to green. Thus, store staff can subsequently retrieve the phones from the machine and add them to the updated inventory section.
