Apple is about to introduce a new service called “Presto within Apple” at its retail stores in the United States. This service will allow Apple retail store employees to perform wireless software updates directly on unopened iPhones using tablet-like devices.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman stated in his Power On newsletter that this new system will undergo initial testing in select Apple retail stores in April. Subsequently, it is set to cover all US stores by the eve of summer. The Presto system began testing in some stores as early as the end of 2023.
In October last year, Gurman initially reported on the system. Later, the 9to5Mac website discovered code related to this feature in the iOS 17.2 system. The core of the Presto within the Apple system consists of a tablet-like device. Retail store employees can place iPhone boxes on it. The system can wirelessly power up the iPhone, update its software, and then shut it down, all while the phone remains in its packaging box.
In today’s Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote, “The system looks a bit like a metal shoe cabinet. It can power the iPhone using MagSafe magnetic and other wireless technologies without opening the package to complete the software update. Once the update is complete, the system will automatically shut down the phone.”
When purchasing a brand-new iPhone from an Apple retail store. Users may not need to perform additional software updates after turning on the phone. Whenever a new iOS version is released, Apple retail stores update devices in advance. This ensures that users have the latest software installed right from the start.
Currently, iPhones come pre-installed with the iOS version available at the time of manufacturing. This means that many users may receive iPhones with versions of the system that are not the latest and will need to upgrade them themselves.
