Apple is actively developing iPhone 16 Pro products and has progressed into the “Proto2” stage. Opting to shift from the prior design, the company is configuring the action buttons to resemble the iPhone 15 Pro models. Within the iPhone 16 Pro testing phase, four button configurations and two sizes are being explored.

The initial prototypes, stemming from Project Bongo, featured unified volume buttons and a small multi-function button on the left, accompanied by a power button on the right. However, Apple ultimately scrapped this design due to unfavorable test results and elevated hardware failure rates.

Despite uncertainties regarding the impact of these alterations on future capacitive action button functionality, the substantial shift in design strongly implies its cancellation or deferral to a subsequent iPhone version.

Rumors suggest that in the early design of the iPhone 16 Pro, the second prototype incorporated unified volume buttons but introduced larger operation buttons and included a camera button. Subsequent prototypes showcased independent volume buttons and a flush bezel design.

In the most recent “Proto2” design, Apple once again modified the operation buttons, making them smaller and essentially identical to those on the iPhone 15 Pro, discarding the larger flush appearance.

The rationale behind Apple’s decision to abandon the previous design and implement such a significant change remains unknown. Nonetheless, these adjustments may have implications for forthcoming products. Irrespective of the motives, anticipation surrounds further updates on the iPhone 16 Pro.
