Redmi Marketing General Manager Wang Teng posted information about “Screen SVM” on Weibo. Tomorrow, Redmi will officially launch an OTA upgrade in response to the escalating discourse around this metric. Redmi’s goal is to bring the SVM value of Redmi K70 within the 0.1 threshold, putting an end to this numerical competition.

  • SVM, denoting the “certification value of the Lighting Association,” serves as a crucial metric in eye protection standards. Compliance with these specifications is indicated by a value below 1. However, it’s crucial to note that the lighting industry validates SVM as a measure, and it lacks authoritative standing in the realm of screens.
  • Currently, there exists no universally acknowledged testing standard for SVM concerning screens. Rendering is incapable of accurately representing the actual human eye experience. Various companies derive their values from their laboratory data and propagate them.

Let’s delve into the specifics of screen SVM:

Understanding SVM

SVM, or the certification value of the Lighting Association, ensures compliance with eye protection standards. It originated in addressing flickering issues with traditional lighting equipment. Nevertheless, it’s essential to stress that the lighting industry tests SVM as a metric, rather than considering it an authoritative measure for screens.

SVM Test Method

Traditional lighting flicker arises from the entire lamp bead alternating between on and off states. The instrument measures the SVM value for the entire light. While OLED screens don’t exhibit uniform brightness changes across the entire surface, the testing methodology is based on the concept of black bars in display rows.

Discrepancies between the human eye’s viewing angle and the measuring equipment’s test angle lead to variations in actual screen brightness fluctuations. Reducing the measurement angle amplifies the impact of reset black bars, especially in PWM mode. Currently, no widely accepted test standard exists for screening SVM testing, and companies extract the values from their respective laboratory data.

Redmi’s Approach

In the DC dimming mode, Redmi K70 and K70 Pro exhibit SVM values of 0.18 at 60Hz and 0.17 at 120Hz, both well below the screen flicker risk standard. These values ensure no adverse effects on the human eye due to stroboscopic effects.

Starting tomorrow, we eagerly announce our rollout of an OTA upgrade, a metric emphasized by industry stakeholders. We aim to maintain the SVM value of Redmi K70 within the 0.1 threshold, putting an end to this numerical competition.

Tomorrow, Cangzhi will lead our display team in a technical forum with Sun Yat-sen University Ophthalmology Center. They’ll discuss a scientifically grounded approach to eye protection, avoiding non-industry standard parameters or melatonin adjustments. More details coming soon.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
