On December 6, Apple rolled out a preliminary edition update for Apple iOS 17.2. The final release debuted during the week commencing December 11th. Within this update, Apple has unveiled a fresh weather gadget and enhanced details regarding weather forecasts, aiding users in more effectively organizing their plans based on this data.

Within this update, Apple has incorporated three innovative weather gadgets onto the home screen. Specifically, users can now assess the likelihood of precipitation, UV index, and wind conditions for the day. Furthermore, users can review the present weather conditions and daily forecasts for a designated region, as well as track sunrise and sunset times at their current location. Significantly, after the official release of iOS 17.2, users can choose from various widget sizes as the “Projection” widget will be available in small, medium, and large dimensions.

IOS 17.2

In addition to the newly introduced weather widget, at the operating system level, this version rectifies certain acknowledged issues and enhances overall system functionality. For instance, users will be alerted with notification prompts when encountering error codes in the Files app, along with addressing security concerns, among other improvements.

AirDrop

We resolved an issue where users experienced occasional failures of AirDrop or the utilization of NameDrop on iOS 17.0/17.1 devices.

Apple Music

Addressed a situation where the display of the Favorite Songs playlist might be delayed on certain iOS/iPad OS, watchOS, and tvOS devices.

AVKit

Rectified the unresponsiveness of AVCaptureEventInteraction to the Action button.

Camera

Capture immersive spatial video with remarkable depth on the iPhone 15 Pro, viewable in 3D within the Photos app on the Apple Vision Pro headset. Activate spatial video shooting in “Settings” > “Camera > Format,” and then record spatial video in “Video” mode within the “Camera” App.

Implemented comprehensive support for specific AVCaptureDeviceFormats on AVCaptureDeviceTypeBuiltInTripleCamera. Depth is now accessible on iPhone 15 Pro’s AVCaptureDeviceTypeBuiltInTripleCamera and iPhone 15’s AVCaptureDeviceTypeBuiltInDualWideCamera, utilizing a broader range of videoZoomFactors while selecting AVCaptureDeviceFormats. Now, AVCaptureDeviceFormats provides the ability to scale when depth is enabled without disrupting reconfiguration.

iMessage Contact Key Verification

Introducing iMessage Contact Key Verification, empowering users to opt for additional verification ensuring they communicate solely with the intended recipient. iMessage Contact Key Verification utilizes Key Transparency, facilitating automatic verification by confirming that the iMessage Key Distribution Service returns a device key logged into a verifiable and auditable mapping. Following activation, users will receive notifications of any verification errors directly in their Messages conversation history and Apple ID settings.

For enhanced security, iMessage Contact Key Verification users can compare contact verification codes in person, during a FaceTime call, or another secure call. They also have the option to create or modify a contact, storing a public key to enable contact key verification for iMessage with that contact.

All devices logged into your iCloud account must operate on the minimum supported version of iOS 17.2 Beta, macOS 14.2 Beta, or watchOS 10.2 Beta. To enable contact key verification, you must sign out of iMessage on those devices if you plan to use them with older operating system versions.

Notes

Facilitate iPhone users in reflecting and practicing gratitude through the Notes app.

Messages

Corrected the display of unlocalized strings (e.g., DETAIL_NUMBER_OF_PEOPLE_LABEL) showing member counts in full-screen map views that could appear in group messages.

Music App

For devices running iOS 17.2 Beta 1, Beta 2, or Beta 3, addressed an issue where recent searches in Apple Music might not appear in the Recent Searches section of the Search tab in the Music app.
