Gizcoupon reported on April 24th that Apple would release a new iPadOS 17 system this year, but not all iPads can enjoy this update. Moreover, according to reliable sources, Apple will abandon support for three models of iPads in iPadOS 17. These are iPad 5, iPad Pro 1st generation 9.7-inch, and 12.9-inch versions, respectively. This means that these iPads will not be able to install the new system or use new features.

Two different sources have confirmed this news. One is an anonymous Twitter account that accurately predicted the compatibility of iOS 13 and iOS 14. At the same time, the other is information obtained by iPhoneSoft from an insider at Apple who correctly predicted last year that the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s would no longer be supported in iOS 16, as well as the compatibility of iOS 13 and iOS 14.

Compatible iPad versions of iPadOS 17

If this news is true, iPadOS 17 will only support iPads released after 2017, including:

  • iPad Air 3 and newer models
  • iPad 6 and newer models
  • iPad mini 5 and newer models
  • iPad Pro 2017 and newer models

However, even if these iPads can be upgraded to the new system, they may not be able to fully experience all the new features and functionalities due to limitations in their hardware performance.

Currently, there is controversy regarding the compatibility of iOS 17 iPhones. There are two different rumors, one saying that three models of iPhone will not be able to upgrade to iOS 17. However, the other is saying that all iPhones capable of running iOS 16 can be upgraded to iOS 17. We will need to wait for more information to confirm.
