During the press conference, Google revealed that the Pixel 8 Pro features an integrated temperature sensor with its primary purpose being temperature measurement. The sensor is positioned on the right side of the phone’s rear camera module to ensure it doesn’t interfere with other phone functions. The Pixel 8 Pro utilizes the Melexis MLX90632 temperature sensor model. According to official specifications, it can measure temperatures ranging from -20 to 200 degrees Celsius. The medical version boasts an accuracy of ±0.2 degrees Celsius, while the standard version offers an accuracy of ±1 degrees Celsius. The specific version Google is using remains undisclosed.

Google explained that users can easily measure the current ambient temperature by pressing a dedicated button on the phone. Furthermore, it can also measure body temperature quickly by simply pointing the phone at one’s forehead and pressing the measurement button. This feature proves highly practical for parents with children.

Additionally, users can record temperature data within the Fitbit app, allowing them to track temperature changes for themselves or others, aiding in monitoring their health status. But it currently does not support measuring body temperature, even if it is fully capable of doing so. Because the body temperature measurement function makes the device a Class II medical device, it requires permission from the US FDA. Google emphasized that the body temperature monitoring application has submitted an application to the US FDA to ensure that the function is legal and compliant.
