Google Chromebook to Receive 10 Years of Security Updates

In 2024, Chromebook platform products will begin receiving updates for up to 10 years, establishing Chromebook’s update policy as one of the longest among all operating systems to date. This commitment is aimed at enhancing the security, stability, and functionality of Chromebook products. Senior engineering directors for ChromeOS, Prajakta Gudadhe and Ashwini Varma, emphasized that “Security is a top priority.” At present, Chromebooks automatically update approximately every four weeks to ensure laptops maintain their security and optimal performance. Starting next year, the automatic update service will expand to provide improved security, stability, and functionality within a decade of the product’s release.

This comprehensive update policy will be applicable to Chromebooks released after 2021. For Chromebooks released before that year, both users and we will receive notifications and have the option to extend automatic updates to a 10-year period. Chromebooks, which made their debut in 2012 and have since become the preferred devices in K-12 education worldwide due to their affordability, will continue to excel in educational settings.

In its pursuit of sustainability, Google is actively integrating post-consumer recycled materials and introducing energy-saving features into its products. Simultaneously, Chromebook’s new security features offer users advanced protection measures, such as instant reset and anti-fraud protection. Google emphasizes that these security enhancements are crucial factors contributing to Chromebooks’ status as one of the most secure devices available.

In contrast, Microsoft has also revealed its support cycle for Windows 11. According to reports, Microsoft plans to release a new version of Windows 11 annually. Each edition will receive 36 months of support for the Enterprise edition and 24 months for the Home and Professional editions. Furthermore, Windows 11 as a whole may continue to adhere to Microsoft’s traditional lifecycle policy, providing 5 years of mainstream support followed by 5 years of extended support after its release. Microsoft will regularly introduce new versions with added features during the mainstream support period, and they will maintain at least one version of Windows 11 after the end of extended support.
