On June 3rd, Gizcoupon reported that some users of Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ had voiced their complaints about the occurrence of blurriness in certain parts of the photos taken with the main camera. This issue has persisted since the release of the phones and is commonly referred to as the “banana blur” issue.
Based on the latest findings shared by Reddit users, Samsung has now acknowledged this “banana blur” issue officially. Furthermore, they have stated that efforts are being made to address and resolve it.
Users have reported that photos taken with the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ sometimes exhibit permanent blurriness in certain areas. This problem becomes particularly noticeable when capturing close-up shots.
On the Polish forum, Samsung has explained that this is a result of the larger aperture of the main camera, which leads to a shallower depth of field. Therefore, some blurriness in the background of the photos. Engineers are currently working diligently to resolve this issue, and it is expected to be alleviated through future software updates.
Samsung has also provided two temporary solutions for addressing this problem, which has been summarized by Gizcoupon as follows:
- Attempt to take photos from a slightly greater distance. If the subject is approximately 30 centimeters away, moving back by about the width of a hand may help.
- Try to hold the phone in a vertical position when taking photos. Holding it horizontally or at an angle may result in a blurred background.
Samsung has further mentioned that when users capture close-up shots with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the camera automatically switches to the wide-angle lens and activates a focus enhancer to prevent blurriness. However, this focus enhancer is not supported in the high-resolution mode, which might also contribute to the background blurring in close-up shots.
