China Academy of Information and Communications Technology Announces The Latest Global Ranking of 5G Standard Essential Patents: Huawei Ranks First, and Xiaomi Enters The Top Ten For The First Time

Gizcoupon reported on May 10th that the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology recently released the “Research Report on Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposals (2023)”. The report shows that the annual declaration volume of 5G standard essential patents has been increasing year by year. As of December 31, 2022, Beijing time, more than 84,900 patents have been declared for this patent worldwide. Moreover, the number of valid global patent families exceeds 60,400.

Among the top ten companies with valid global patent families, five are Chinese companies, one more than last year. The top ten companies are Huawei, Qualcomm, Samsung, ZTE, LG, Nokia, Ericsson, Datang, OPPO, and Xiaomi. However, Apple was not making the list. It is worth noting that this is the first time Xiaomi has entered the top ten.

The report shows that among the entities that declare 5G standard essential patents to ETSI, the top ten companies account for over 75% of the total valid global patent families. This largely reflects the main trend of global 5G standard essential patent activities.

According to research by the GSA, as of March 2023, 249 5G networks have been deployed by operators in 97 countries or regions globally. In addition, over 1,800 5G terminals have been launched by global manufacturers.
