Gizcoupon reported on April 28th that, according to statistics released by market research firm IDC, global smartphone shipments in Q1 2023 reached 268.6 million units, a year-on-year decline of 14.6%, marking the 7th consecutive quarter of decline.
The report pointed out that in Q1 2023, almost all global markets saw a double-digit decline, with China experiencing a nearly 12% decrease.
Details of the Global smartphone market
Regarding the Chinese market, a more detailed report shows that in Q1 2023, the shipment of foldable screen products in China remained stable, reaching 1.02 million units, a year-on-year increase of 52.8%. Among them, the share of vertically folding products continued to rise to 44.3%. Furthermore, with more manufacturers joining and more products being released, it is expected that China’s foldable screen smartphone market will continue to grow rapidly in 2023.
In terms of manufacturers, OPPO became the market share leader for the first time, reaching 35.0%. Among them, the Find N2 Flip accounted for nearly 22% of the market share. Huawei ranks second during the period of transition between old and new products, with a market share of 24.9%. Samsung remained stable and ranked third, with a market share of 18.4%, the same as last quarter. The Magic Vs series helped Honor achieve a market share of 10.5%, reaching its historical high. Xiaomi ranked fifth, with a market share of 5.6%. Vivo’s X Fold+ series is at the end of its product life cycle but still achieved a market share of 4.5%. Lenovo had a market share of 1.1%.

Developed markets such as the US and Western Europe performed better than other markets, with declines of 11.5% and 9.4%, respectively. Sales in emerging markets had the largest decrease, between 17% to 20%.
In terms of brand segmentation, Samsung recaptured the leading position with 22.5% of the global smartphone market share. Apple fell to second place with 20.5%. Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Among them, Xiaomi’s shipment volume saw the most significant decline, with a decrease of more than 23.5%.
