According to Gizcoupon’s report on April 10th, Global PC shipments fell sharply in the first quarter of 2023, with Apple being hit the hardest, according to a report released by market research firm IDC. The report stated that weak demand, oversupply, and a deteriorating macroeconomic environment caused global PC shipments to drop by 29% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year. The shipment volume of PCs continued to decline from the fourth quarter of 2022, with shipments falling 28.1% year-on-year.

The report analyzed the top five PC manufacturers and found that Apple had the largest decline in shipments in the first quarter, with a 40.5% decline compared to the same period in 2022. Dell ranked second with a 31% decline, while Lenovo, Asus, and HP also faced a decline in shipments.

Gizcoupon reported that Apple claimed in February of this year that sales of its Mac computers had thrived during the pandemic-driven trend of remote work. However, in the latest quarter, Apple’s sales revenue fell by 29% year-on-year to $7.7 billion, indicating that Apple’s Mac sales were not immune to the current market conditions.

Linn Huang, Vice President of Devices and Displays Research at IDC, said, “If the economy shows an upward trend by 2024, we expect the market to have significant room for growth as consumers seek upgrades, schools seek to replace outdated Chromebooks, and businesses turn to Windows 11.” This statement implies that the market may recover in the coming years, given that economic conditions improve.
