On April 11th, news surfaced that top artificial intelligence development companies would convene to discuss establishing AI technology standards. Executives and employees from these firms are expected to attend the meeting, which is scheduled for this Wednesday.
Representatives from companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Nvidia, Stability AI, Hugging Face, and Anthropic are expected to attend the meeting. Top investment company SV Angel convenes this meeting. The attending representatives plan to discuss how to continue developing artificial intelligence in the most responsible manner.
Several weeks ago, tech industry leaders led by Elon Musk published an open letter. They call for OpenAI and other companies to pause AI development for six months. Moreover, they use this time to create and implement safety protocols.
The letter stated, “Powerful AI systems should be developed only in a context of ensuring that their positive benefits are widely and fairly shared and that the risks are carefully managed.” It also called for a temporary halt to AI development.
“AI labs and third-party experts should use this time to develop and implement shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development. These protocols should be subject to rigorous external review and oversight by third-party experts,” the letter continued. “Meanwhile, AI developers must collaborate with policymakers to accelerate the development of powerful AI governance systems.”
Meanwhile, US lawmakers believe that regulation of AI technology is necessary, but no significant legislation has been passed yet.
US Senator Cynthia Lummis said in an interview, “I had a friend demonstrate ChatGPT to me, and it was a little scary how functional it was. They can certainly leave a lasting impression, but the potential for pranks and abuse is high.”
“This is an area that needs guidance and oversight,” said Senator Lindsey Graham.
