Many things can be attributed to Xiaomi’s smart home ecosystem, with its wide array of products. The Xiaomi Mijia M40 is just one of them. Till this date, Xiaomi supports unparalleled convenience when pairing devices or managing your whole home through the Mi Home App. This is what sets it apart from many competitors.
At the start of 2024, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi announced its Mijia M30 robot vacuum and mop-a highlight within its price range for being versatile and not too expensive. After six months, the Chinese company is now presenting the Mijia M40, designed to become the most affordable all-in-one vacuum and mop robot.

The new Xiaomi Mijia M40 deploys several unprecedented improvements over its predecessor. The design has evolved from a single robotic arm to dual arms, hence enabling millimeter-level cleaning precisely with high precision next to walls and in corners. Suction has also been greatly upgraded from 7,300Pa to 12,000Pa without much problem in managing daily debris like hair, crumbs, and so on.
Besides, M40 features some of the high-end features of its higher-end siblings, including real-time hair-cutting technology to prevent tangles and a high-temperature mop drying function at the all-in-one base station, which adds more value to it.
Next, we go on to review the cleaning performance and overall user experience of the Mijia M40 by hands-on testing.
Design
The Xiaomi Mijia M40 continues its sleek white design from the predecessor with minimalistic aesthetics. The most obvious new change is a concentric circle-brushed finish on the raised top section, which houses the LDS laser sensor and its cover. This enables 360° scanning, thus giving the M40 the capability to very quickly map out the home’s layout for effective navigation and evasion of wild movements while cleaning.
Measuring 350×97mm and weighing about 4.2kg, the M40 fits with a 5200mAh battery to offer sizeable cleaning power. Under its top cover, it has placed a dust box and a reset button for easy access.
The Mijia M40 retains many components on its side, which are the charging electrodes, automatic water refill ports, dust collection ports, docking ports, and edge sensors. Working in concert with the newly fitted wide-angle laser detection system, it offers real-time scanning, precise cleaning around corners, and eliminates blind spots.
The dual robotic arm cleaning system is revealed in the bottom of the unit, touting a side brush for reaching corners and a mop that mimics human hands, capable of rotating at 180 rpm for best mopping. Both brushes have been designed to lift automatically to avoid carpet wetting.
What else
The central main brush has an automatic haircutting mechanism. It starts to sweep and cut right when it meets the hair. The M40, with an outstanding 12,000Pa suction and 48,000 rpm fan speed, stores hair, dust, and other particles efficiently in the dust box. Additionally, the design of the side shaft on the main brush prevents tangling.
The base station follows the same clean white design as the main unit, covering everything from a signal transmission area to charging contacts, automatic water filling ports, and even mop-washing outlets. The station dries the mop at 70°C in preparation for its next use.
Indeed, opening the top cover of the base station reveals two 4L tanks-one is for clean water and the other is for dirty water-which enable the extended cleaning of larger spaces, up to 700 m², without frequent water changes. Garbage collected during cleaning automatically goes into the bag, requiring disposal only once every 75 days, further adding to the overall convenience of the M40.
Sweeping and Mopping Experience
First usage, it will map out your home instantly with the Xiaomi Mijia M40. Thanks to the advanced LDS navigation laser system, the robot scans the entire layout in 360°, completing a scan of a room up to 15m² in under 3 minutes. Once the robot maps the room, you can customize the cleaning settings in the Mi Home App by merging or splitting rooms, setting virtual walls, and designating areas for restricted sweeping or mopping. Even without making the manual changes, it works seamlessly.
You can also adjust, with the app’s assistance, the cleaning mode, suction power, and mop water volume. Automation features include scheduling the robot to clean at any time you want. For example, you can schedule it to clean every morning when you leave for work, ensuring a spotless home by the time you return each evening.
We have set the Mijia M40 to sweep and mop simultaneously. Suction is at maximum power-12000Pa, while the amount of water from the mop is standard. Although this powerful suction is highly effective, it generates noticeable noise, so adjusting the suction power to suit your needs is recommended.
The Mijia M40 features a three-section anti-tangle design. It can brush while simultaneously cutting, accommodating hair of any lengths. With powerful 12,000Pa suction, the vacuum collects hair upon contact, minimizing the need for manual hair removal and preventing tangles.
It does more
Cleaning dry debris or wet spills, it handles both in style. For dry particles, such as powder, the strong suction prevents scattering and collects everything in a single pass. Cleaning larger liquid spills, like soy sauce, takes several passes to fully clean the floor without leaving noticeable residue behind.
It reaches, in particular, corners that are difficult to reach and extends its robotic arm to clean the edges of the room precisely. In addition, the dual robotic arm system includes a side brush and mop to offer millimeter-level edge cleaning, ensuring full coverage along walls, under furniture, and into tight spaces. Both the side brush and mop feature a lift function that prevents damage to or wetting of carpets.
It also supports constant-humidity mopping, whereby the mop continuously stays in a damp state, delivering perfect cleaning of the floor. With a small built-in water tank along with a 4L water tank in the base station, this system allows for continuous mopping without frequent refills and is suitable for large apartments.
Base Station Experience
Equally important is base station maintenance after the cleaning. When returning to its base station for charging, the Xiaomi Mijia M40 automatically starts dust collection, washing the mop, and drying it out. Additionally, the Mi Home App allows users to adjust the backwash frequency, mop cleaning intensity, and drying time to suit their needs.
The mop washes at temperatures up to 70°C, ensuring it effectively dissolves even the most stubborn stains. Additionally, the drying process takes only 2 hours, which helps prevent mold and odors in humid areas during seasons of high moisture.
We tested cleaning the Mijia M40 after it encountered some stubborn stains like coffee powder and soy sauce. Setting it to system deep mop washing and 2-hour high-temperature drying, we noticed that the cleaning removed most of the stains, though not completely. If one wants more thorough results, users may want to extend it to 4 hours for a deeper clean.
This amount of customization and effective deep cleaning makes the Mijia M40 a perfect solution for those seeking convenience and, at the same time, a cost-effective way to keep one’s home clean.
Conclusion
For the price, the Xiaomi Mijia Robot Vacuum-Mop M40 is the best all-around cleaning solution: it boasts 12,000Pa suction and a new dual-arm design, and it removes both dry and wet messes without greater effort. Additionally, scheduled cleanings can minimize its noise for more convenient use on a day-to-day basis. The base station boasts a 4L water tank capacity and low maintenance; for instance, dust collection is once every 75 days. With its user-friendly design, it takes home cleaning performance to another level with high performance indeed at a very competitive price.
