Google plans to make significant adjustments to the desktop mode in the upcoming Android 15 system update. Google introduced split-screen mode in Android 7.0 and desktop mode in the Android 10 system released in 2019, but overall, it was quite basic.

In the Android 13 quarterly update released by the end of 2022, Google quietly revamped Android’s desktop mode, focusing on improving window management, particularly optimizing the display and control of multiple Android applications on the screen.

In the upcoming Android 15 update, Google plans to further enhance the desktop mode by adding a “handle” icon at the top of each full-screen application. When users click on it, three menus pop up: full-screen, split-screen, and freeform mode proportions.

Once users choose to switch to freeform mode, applications will have a title bar displaying the application name and icon, a dropdown menu for opening the menu to change window modes, a maximize button, and a close button, allowing users to automatically move and adjust application windows.

Adjusting window size temporarily hides the contents of the application to make it easier to view while resizing. You can drag windows to the left or right edge to pin them to that half.
