Apple plans to release the iPhone 16 series in the second half of this year, with further reductions expected in the screen borders. Reports indicate that four models will debut: the standard version, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max, all incorporating the new Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology for ultra-thin bezels.

Korean media reveals that Apple intends to integrate BRS technology into the displays of the iPhone 16 series. This technology aims to minimize the bottom frame of the panel, achieved by winding copper wires upward to reduce the lower frame area. Rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 series, especially the Pro model, will feature larger screens due to ultra-thin bezel technology.

An individual familiar with the display industry mentions efforts to reduce bezels on all sides of smartphones, with particular emphasis on minimizing the bottom bezel. As cooling technology advances, borderless technology is expected to see renewed use.

Industry experts indicate that suppliers like Samsung Display, LG Display, and BOE possess this technology. Furthermore, they suggest that implementing it isn’t overly challenging. However, mass production could potentially alter the competitive landscape among companies.

Apart from bezel reductions, the display sizes for the iPhone 16 Standard Edition and 16 Plus are likely to remain unchanged. Anticipations suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models will feature larger displays.

Market research firm Omdia projects the iPhone 16 Pro to increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches compared to the previous generation, while the 16 Pro Max may grow from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. Both models are anticipated to retain the LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) OLED panel type.

Apple’s recent product developments have emphasized maximizing screen utility, with ongoing exploration into under-screen camera (UDC) applications. However, Omdia’s Minsoo Kang suggests a potential delay in UDC technology, possibly extending to 2027 from the originally slated 2026.

The increase in screen size will also cause an increase in body size. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be slightly taller and wider than the previous models. The larger body will provide Apple with more internal space to accommodate other components, such as a potentially larger capacity battery for the iPhone 16 Pro series.

Furthermore, analysts expect that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Moreover, Apple plans to incorporate larger 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch displays for the forthcoming launch of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus in 2025.
