Sony Xperia 1 VI Will be Released in May, Canceling Xperia 5 Series

Blogger @zackbuks recently brought the latest news about Sony’s new phone, expected to be the Sony Xperia 1 VI, changing the screen ratio from 21:9 to around 19.5:9, dropping the resolution from 4K to 2K+, widening overall, sticking to the design ethos of the previous generation. He also mentioned the concept images are not accurate representations, any similarities are purely coincidental. The global release is still slated for around May.

Moreover, early this morning, the blogger posted “Xperia 5 Series, R.I.P 2024”, indicating Sony won’t be releasing the Xperia 5 series phones this year instead of the Sony Xperia 1 VI.

In May 2023, Sony launched the previous Xperia 1 V, with a starting price of 8999 yuan (about $1252). The phone boasted a 6.5-inch 21:9 4K (3860×1644) non-punch-hole display, real-time HDR technology support, and upgraded full-range front stereo speakers. Moreover, it ran on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, housed a 5000mAh battery, and provided support for 33W PD3.0 fast charging and Qi wireless charging, among other features.

The Xperia 1 V uses the IMX888 main camera (24mm, 1/1.35, 52MP full aspect ratio, 48MP effective pixels, 12MP static output, 2.24um pixel size, F1.9), featuring the new Exmor T dual-layer stacked CMOS image sensor.

Sony released the Xperia 5 V in September 2023, pricing it at 6999 yuan. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, boasting a 6.1-inch 21:9 OLED display with a resolution of 2520×1080. The display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, real-time HDR, and DCI-P3 100%.

The rear camera setup of the Sony Xperia 5 V has changed from the previous generation’s triple camera to a dual-camera setup, consisting of a 12 Megapixel 16mm lens (1/2.5 inch, F2.2, 124° field of view) and a 48 million pixel 24mm lens (1/1.35 inch, F1.9, 84° field of view), with up to 2x zoom to 48mm.
