Today, blogger @数码闲聊站 broke the news that the entire Xiaomi 15 series has started testing ultrasonic fingerprint modules from the Chinese manufacturer, Goodix. In April, it will enter the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase.
According to the blogger, the Xiaomi 15 series will maintain the same strategy as the Xiaomi 13 and 14 series, featuring both standard and small-screen versions. The straight screen design will persist in the standard version, while we are currently testing the small screen version with the Holitech single-point ultrasonic fingerprint solution.
Earlier, the blogger revealed that Xiaomi intends to start mass production of the 15 series in September, foreseeing a potential product release event in October.
Furthermore, the Xiaomi 15 series is anticipated to incorporate Goodix’s single-point ultrasonic under-display fingerprint solution. The company concluded testing this technology in the middle of last year. Regarding the other smartphone brands, Oppo and OnePlus also use next-generation small-size fingerprint direct screens.
Compared to Qualcomm’s solution, Goodix’s solution, while limited to “single point” recognition, has certain cost advantages and no issues in terms of speed and recognition rate.
Unlike the commonly used optical fingerprint recognition solutions, the under-display ultrasonic fingerprint does not require illuminating the fingerprint through the screen when unlocking. It also maintains a respectable success rate even in wet conditions. The actual area of the fingerprint is 5mmx5mm and it uses using SPI interface function. The company asserted that this technology integrates into CMOS architecture, enabling faster processing with a module thickness of approximately 0.17mm.
