Apple makes it nearly unfeasible for users to enhance the storage and memory of a Mac post-purchase. Consequently, the configuration acquired initially becomes fixed for the device’s lifespan. Nevertheless, alternative methods exist to expand the existing storage capacity of these systems, as demonstrated by a modder who successfully augmented the flash storage of the latest Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max to eight times its original setup.

@lipilipsi, the owner of the Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max, initially equipped with 1TB of storage space, found this capacity satisfactory. However, for some users, it might be excessively limited. Apple’s exorbitant charges for storage upgrades—from 512GB to 1TB—prompted the modder to devise a seemingly “simple” solution for increasing storage. Unfortunately, this task proves challenging for the average MacBook Pro user, demanding soldering tools, nimble hands, and an intricate understanding of the MacBook Pro’s internal workings.

Upgrading to 8TB Requires Chip Replacement

As depicted in the image, vacant solder joints on the Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max present opportunities for installing additional flash memory. Although the post doesn’t specify the new storage capacity, assuming the MacBook Pro shipped with a 1TB configuration, upgrading to 8TB necessitates removing the existing flash memory and installing four 2TB NAND flash memory chips.

However, simply soldering additional storage onto the Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max doesn’t ensure seamless booting, as macOS recognizes only the product’s original 1TB internal storage. Consequently, software adjustments are imperative before the operating system acknowledges the memory upgrade, although this crucial step is absent from the modder’s picture.

While the blogger didn’t disclose the cost of upgrading to 8TB of flash memory, it’s reasonable to assume that it’s much cheaper than what Apple charges. Regrettably, it seems unlikely that Apple will alter its policy on machine upgrades. Consequently, users face the choice of paying Apple’s premium or seeking individuals with the expertise and essential hardware for implementing such upgrades.
