The ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate is a significant power-consuming feature in the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This feature dynamically adjusts the refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz based on the screen content.

However, is it worth turning off this feature to extend battery life? Recent tests indicate that the impact may not be significant. Jason Cross from Macworld conducted tests by limiting the screen refresh rate to 60Hz in the accessibility settings. Initially, he performed battery tests using Geekbench 4, revealing an approximately 5% improvement in battery life. Another test, closer to real-world usage, involved continuous browsing on Instagram and Reddit, yielding similar results. He concludes that while turning off ProMotion saves some battery, sacrificing smoothness for it is not worthwhile.

He also mentioned a noticeable difference in battery life when playing games that support 120fps. He observed that when ProMotion Display was turned off while playing these games, the power consumption was only about half of what it was when the feature was enabled.

In general, there is usually no need to disable ProMotion unless you are gaming and actively seeking to save battery power.
