Recently, Xiaomi announced an exciting feature called “UltraSpace Storage Expansion” at the HyperOS and Xiaomi 14 Series product launch event. According to Zhang Guoquan, the Director of Xiaomi’s Mobile System Software Department, this “UltraSpace Storage Expansion” feature poses no risk to the UFS lifespan. Xiaomi has also contributed this standard to the UFS Association, and other major smartphone manufacturers will soon adapt to this functionality. To uphold originality, Xiaomi has requested chip manufacturers to observe a protection period, demonstrating their respect for technological innovation and intellectual property.
In close collaboration with storage manufacturers, Xiaomi has delved deeply into understanding the working principles of storage to ensure that while compressing the OP area space, it does not affect the storage’s performance and lifespan. Furthermore, Xiaomi has made deep customizations to the file system, adding logic address mapping ranges to efficiently manage the newly added space.
As previously explained by Lei Jun, Xiaomi 14 Series storage labeled as 256GB exceeds 275GB. The “UltraSpace Storage Expansion” feature will provide users with approximately 8GB or 16GB of additional space. This means users can store more data on their phones without the need for frequent cleaning of unnecessary files or applications, significantly enhancing the convenience of smartphone use.
Xiaomi has demonstrated its position in the mobile technology field through the “UltraSpace Storage Expansion” feature. This innovation not only enhances the user experience but also sets a new industry standard. We look forward to seeing more smartphone manufacturers follow this trend, collectively driving the development of mobile storage technology.
