Xiaomi has been conducting trial production for nearly a month, and preparations for mass production of 50 prototypes per week are underway. As per Xiaomi Group’s recently released financial report for the second quarter, the company’s investment in innovative ventures like smart Xiaomi Car amounted to 1.4 billion yuan during that period.
During a performance exchange meeting, Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi Group, revealed that Xiaomi has invested more than the disclosed figure in its automotive endeavors. Xiaomi aims to position itself among the top five global electric vehicle brands in the future. This strategic plan includes in-house research and the construction of a car factory, necessitating substantial capital investment.
A source familiar with the situation stated, “Xiaomi Motors received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology just two months ago and is expected to secure final approval by the end of the year at the latest. Once approved, Xiaomi Motors will be ready to commence full-scale mass production.”
Lu Weibing also disclosed that Xiaomi Motors has recently completed its summer testing phase, reporting smooth progress. The company maintains its target of commencing mass production in the first half of 2024.
In the automotive industry, having “dual qualifications” has always been crucial for a company’s ability to manufacture cars. This requirement is pivotal. Some tech companies, like Baidu, have struggled to meet these qualifications and chose to support the industry as intelligence providers. Xiaomi’s car manufacturing qualifications have gained public attention. Xiaomi Motors received approval from NDRC for Xiaomi Car production and is awaiting approval from Tenna.
Trial production serves as a critical step preceding mass production. It enables the evaluation of production line equipment performance, process integration, worker proficiency, and overall product consistency. Any issues encountered during prototype testing prompt further investigation and adjustment of the production line. Conversely, successful trial production signifies that the production line is essentially ready for large-scale mass production.
It has come to our attention that an insider with close ties to Xiaomi Motors has informed the media that the company has recently entered the trial production phase, which has been ongoing for less than a month. Xiaomi’s current output stands at approximately 50 prototypes per week, with minimal overnight staffing.
