On June 12th, Gizcoupon reported that according to a report by Yomiuri Shimbun, the integration of AI security technologies and drones into school security measures is gaining traction in Japan. Whether it is universities or primary and secondary schools, they are considering this digital transformation to enhance security efficiency and save labor.

AI security technologies

In April, Japan’s Ritsumeikan University introduced a comprehensive AI security system at its campus in Ibaraki, Osaka. The system utilizes AI to analyze surveillance video footage and promptly issue warnings. Out of the 200 cameras currently installed on the campus, approximately 50 are compatible with this system. When suspicious individuals are detected, the system automatically monitors and immediately sends the footage to the central control room for security personnel.

Security personnel mentioned that after the implementation of this system, they no longer need to devote all their attention to monitoring the video footage. This has made their work more efficient. In addition, the campus has also introduced robots for building patrols.

Meanwhile, trials for drone security are underway at Ritsumeikan University’s Biwako-Kusatsu and Kindai University’s Higashi-Osaka campuses. These drones can quickly reach their destinations and cover a wide area.

Startups Developing AI Security Technologies in Japan

In Japan, apart from major corporations like Mitsubishi Electric and Konica Minolta, there are also startups such as i-Pro and Secure focusing on researching AI security technologies.

According to i-Pro, based in Tokyo, due to the prevalence of firearms, many schools in the United States have more advanced security measures compared to Japan. Almost every school has 30 to 50 cameras connected to an AI system. When AI detects suspicious individuals nearby, it swiftly closes the school gates to prevent intrusion. Additionally, the police and private security personnel receive automatic notifications and quickly respond to the schools.

Ajira, another startup based in Tokyo, has developed a smaller AI monitoring system, limiting the number of cameras to fewer than 20, making it easier for Japanese primary and secondary schools to deploy. Takuya Nagato, from Ritsumeikan University’s Public Relations Department, expressed the hope of eventually introducing these cutting-edge security technologies to the affiliated elementary, middle, and high schools and promoting them throughout the country.

Gizcoupon has previously reported that Japan is facing a difficult labor supply situation due to issues such as an aging population and declining birth rates. As a result, the Japanese government and private sector have been discussing the possibility of utilizing AI to address labor shortages.
