Porsche China CEO: China’s Luxury Car Market Too Small to Mass Produce

At the 6th Shanghai International Import Expo today, Michael Kirsch, the CEO of Porsche China, conveyed that Porsche’s current sales volume and scale in the Chinese market cannot justify Chinese production.

Kirsch stated, “Porsche is a luxury brand, and we won’t engage in mass production. Instead, we will prioritize personalized options and special customer needs. Regarding production in China, we will maintain a vigilant approach and assess the situation.”

Back in 2018, Peter Obermaugh, who was the CEO of Porsche at the time and now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen Group, and emphasized that “Porsche’s overall production output is relatively low, especially when considering its diverse car series. Hence, manufacturing in China is not cost-effective. However, if Porsche’s annual sales for a particular model in China exceed 100,000 units in the future, we will consider production plans.

Furthermore, Official sales data from Porsche China previously revealed a sluggish performance in the Chinese market during the first three quarters of this year. Only 60,700 vehicles were delivered across all models, marking a 12% year-on-year decline. Stay tuned with us for more future updates in future.
