Meizu Lucky 08: AI-Powered, Long-Lasting, and Unique

The Meizu Lucky 08 AI mobile phone launched at Meizu AI Ecosystem Launch Conference a few days ago, starting from 1,599 yuan ($225); the smart flagship came with advanced AI capabilities and a long-lasting battery. The Lucky 08 is a bit “unconventional” compared to the flagship models of Meizu. It’s the first round camera module phone from Meizu, and it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor, a 6000mAh battery, and a 1.5K 144Hz LTPO high-brightness eye-protection screen.

Design

The Meizu Lucky 08 phone comes in clean, minimalist packing with a pure white background. On the front side, it prints “MEIZU Lucky 08” and “AI.”

Meizu Lucky 08

Opening it, one will notice right away that the Lucky 08 deviates from Meizu’s usual “small but beautiful” design language convention. Instead, it uses a new design language called “Star Track Technology Aesthetics.” Cameras are in a triangular formation, comprising a 100-megapixel main camera at the top, the macro lens at the bottom left, and the flash is at the bottom right.

The frame design on the Lucky 08 is a right-angle one. While such designs sometimes compromise on comfort, Meizu has tried to mitigate this with subtle curvature along the edges. Pair this with a weight of 202g and a broader body; because of that, the weight of the phone rests evenly, allowing it to be comfortable to hold-even one-handed.

It has a 1.75mm ultra-narrow bezel in the front, while both sides are fitted with 2.5D micro-arcs and G3 perfectly rounded corners, reaching a screen-to-body ratio of 93.55%. Another important point is that the Star White version sports a white panel in the front. At first glance, this display seems rather easy on the eyes-even at high sunlight intensity.

What else

The new 6.78-inch OLED display uses Tianma U8 luminous material and supports a 144Hz refresh rate, while also offering a dynamic 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This screen displays a full-screen brightness of 1600 nits, a local peak brightness reaching 5000 nits, and at low brightness, it does 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

One of the striking features of the Lucky 08 is the red multi-function AI button on its side. This button serves a dual purpose for power and AI, offering multiple functions that can be performed by double-clicking for AI search, song recognition, audio connection, semi-automatic call receiving, among others.

In the box, it comes with a protective case, a 33W fast charging adapter, a data cable, a SIM ejector, and other main accessories.

Selling points

Generally, Meizu Lucky 08 includes a new camera design, keeps the balance of weights, and provides a 1.5K quality display. For this price, this gadget would be a pretty good value for money.

Meizu Lucky Series: “Stylish and Practical” The first model in this lineup is the Meizu Lucky 08, which is fitted out with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chip and the native Flyme AIOS system with over 100 AI functions. We tried to pay attention to checking some key features of the phone.

Smartphone AI Answering

This cool feature enables AI to answer calls fully automatically or semi-automatically. In the latter case, the AI itself proposes three variants of responses, judging by the call’s content. The user can select one of them or input his or her own; then, the Lucky 08 will pronounce it.
– Full Automatic Mode: AI will take over the whole conversation and will continue the call or hang it according to the situation.

AI Call Summary

When using the AI answering feature, the call records are saved, and Lucky 08 can automatically generate summaries and services based on these records.
The feature requires users to access the relevant call record, listen to the playback, and then summarize it before it can be added to the notes.

AI-Assisted Input

The Lucky 08 uses intelligent content association to assist users in inputting content. It supports intelligent suggestions, one-click input, sending text messages, writing reviews, and generating replies in a specified tone.

AI Notes

AI-powered note-taking app for writing and editing-articles, to-do lists, social media copies, and more. It also supports summarizing, translating, and correcting notes.

AI Global Recording

Record apps system-wide, and it also supports summary and abstract generation on all recorded files.

After testing for several days, what happens is that the outstanding emphasis of Lucky 08 is on its use in everyday practicality. The feature set is chiseled to help with scenarios regarding daily life and work rather than focusing on creative tasks such as drawing or writing. It goes on to make the Lucky 08 particularly user-friendly for the average consumer.

Taken together, these AI functions promoted by Meizu can effectively assist in daily work: for instance, when inconvenient, Lucky 08 can substitute for receiving a call; in the note-taking APP, users can quickly jot down ideas with the help of AI, and simple information can be easily organized and summarized.

Performance Test

The Meizu Lucky 08 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 fabricated on a 4nm manufacturing process. For performance, there is an integrated Kryo CPU with four 2.4 GHz high-performance cores and four 1.95 GHz efficiency cores coupled with Adreno GPU. This supports an FHD+ 144Hz display and allows for up to 12GB of 3200MHz LPDDR5 memory and UFS 4.0 flash storage.

We first fired up AnTuTu Benchmark V10 to measure the performance, and the Lucky 08 had a total of 630,641; CPU points were 214477, while GPU garnered 118,224 points.

Later on, a subsequent test using GeekBench 6 delivered a single-core result of 1,018 points and a multi-core result of 2,941 points.

In terms of storage, the Lucky 08 had 61,746 points from AnTuTu’s storage benchmark. This device recorded a sequential read speed of 1062.3 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 809.7 MB/s, while random read and write speeds stood at 514.0 MB/s and 438.0 MB/s, respectively. It managed an AI read speed of 158.0 MB/s.

Translating these numbers into real-world performance, we fired up the Lucky 08 with a mobile game – “Honor of Kings.” We applied the default recommended graphics settings, changing only frame rate to “ultra-high” at 90 fps manually. During a 16-minute session, the average frame rate came at 87.7 fps, with minor frame drops during two most intense team battles.

Overall, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 ensures that daily tasks run smoothly on the Lucky 08. It handles games like “Honor of Kings” smoothly, but heavier games require reduced graphics quality and/or frame rate for a smoother experience.

Camera

The Meizu Lucky 08 features a dual-camera setup, including a 100-megapixel main camera (Samsung S5KHM6s, 1/1.67″) and a 2-megapixel depth of field lens. Using the main camera, it provides an equivalent focal length of 23.62mm, utilizes 9-1 pixel binning technology, hence forming 1.92μm fusion pixels for better image clarity. The front has an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Equipped with a primary camera of 100 megapixels, the Lucky 08 is good at shooting in high resolution and retaining as much detail as possible in the picture.

The photo album application also integrates AI in its two important features: elimination and expansion.

Although the imaging quality of Meizu Lucky 08 may not be particularly tremendous, the device itself comes with quite a versatile feature set. In fact, it includes a 100-megapixel main camera capable of shooting a 2x crop, which is roughly equivalent to a 48mm focal length for greater flexibility. Meanwhile, the camera app has AI scene recognition, AI beauty mode, super night mode, and streamer shutter. In addition, AI inside the photo album will further expand the post-processing capability of this device, making it quite versatile for photography enthusiasts.

Battery Life and Charging

One of the highlight features of the Meizu Lucky 08 is that it boasts a solid 6000mAh battery, which, according to the company, offers “one full charge for up to two days, or a maximum of three days.” The phone supports 33W wired fast charging, and it comes with a 33W charger in the box.

Charging Test:
After completely discharging the battery, we tested the phone’s charging capabilities. First 30 minutes of powering off the phone then continued charging the phone with the screen on after it reached 97% battery.

Endurance Test:
Simulating typical daily usage, in a Wi-Fi environment, the screen brightness was at 100%, refresh rate set to 144Hz, and Bluetooth enabled:

Online video plays 1080P high frame rate movies for 45 minutes, consuming 5% power. Twitter browses for 15 minutes and consumes 5%. Browsing our website for 10 minutes consumes 3%. Watching short videos on TikTok for 20 minutes consumes 3%. After using it for 90 minutes, playing different kinds of items, the phone cost 16% power and still had 84% remaining. Through this experience, one could judge that the Lucky 08 has good performance in its battery life. It still had about 25% charge left after a whole day of heavy use, which will be enough to play 2 to 3 rounds of “Honor of Kings.”

Moreover, the phone includes a low-battery shutdown reminder; when the remaining power runs low, it counts down for 30 seconds before automatically shutting down. Generally speaking, this 6000mAh battery will meet demands in daily use and thus keep Lucky 08 a firm position among users who don’t have to worry about battery life.

Conclusion

Positioned as a mid-range model, Meizu Lucky 08 introduces new AI functions. Meizu introduced a uniquely designed one-touch AI wake-up power button for the first time in its history. The phone at present has text generation, information extraction, call assistance, etc. According to future updates, there will be AI price comparison, one touch hailing a taxi, and clocking in.

So, after trying this device, the Meizu Lucky 08 is a mid-range phone with its own personality. Perhaps the choice of processor is a slight drawback, but the battery life will be great thanks to the 6000mAh battery. Its screen and design are also noteworthy and stand out in this price range. Given that it costs about 2,000, this model will turn out to be a good option for those fond of the Flyme system, four-sided white panels, and longer battery life-all in an affordable budget.
