OnePlus 12R Uses UFS 3.1, Not 4.0: Company Apology Issued

The OnePlus 12R was supposed to be a budget-friendly powerhouse with UFS 4.0, but tests later revealed that all versions, including the 256GB model, used UFS 3.1 instead. OnePlus publicly said sorry to customers who believed they were getting a better device.

OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu addressed the issue on the brand’s community page:

OnePlus 12R

“At the OnePlus 12R launch, we introduced the Trinity Engine, new software to keep the phone’s memory and storage fast. Due to a bug, we mistakenly said that in some cases, the storage enhanced by Trinity Engine would be UFS 4.0. Now, all OnePlus 12R models have Trinity Engine, but the actual standard is UFS 3.1.

UFS 3.1 is as fast as in the OnePlus 11 series, ensuring your phone performs well in memory tasks. The 12R with Trinity Engine features, like faster app launches and 72-hour app locks, is fully tested with UFS 3.1. TUV SUD has certified the OnePlus 12R for using UFS 3.1, promising smooth operation for 48 months. Your OnePlus 12R will remain fast and smooth for a long time.

We apologize for this mistake on behalf of our team. We’re still excited about the OnePlus 12 and 12R, hoping you’ll love them when they arrive. If you have concerns, contact our customer service.”

If the goal was to make the 256GB 12R more appealing, the company succeeded, but carefulness is crucial for future releases to avoid such issues.

The OnePlus 12R runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and features a 6.78-inch 1264×2780 LTPO4 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The peak brightness reaches 4500 nits, and the overall brightness is 1600 nits. The phone has a large 5500mAh battery and supports 100W SUPERVOOC wired charging. All models of the 12R come with UFS 3.1 instead of 4.0. An official apology is issued for the error message.

In the camera department, the OnePlus 12R adopts a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera with a 1/1.56-inch large sensor, 24mm f/1.8 lens, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro lens. The front camera is a 16MP f/2.4. Additionally, the 12R supports IP64 dust and water resistance. The OnePlus 12R launched globally last month. It starts at 699 euros. Stay tuned for more.
