Snapdragon X Elite: Next-Gen Chipset with 5G and Wi-Fi 7 Support

According to VideoCardz, Snapdragon X Elite, the first new product of the Snapdragon X series, will launch the Oryon custom core and can bring about twice the performance of the x86 architecture with its CPU and GPU. The GPU computing power can reach 4.6 TFLOPS.

In terms of specific architecture configuration, we can summarize the previously reported news as follows:

Snapdragon X Elite

The CPU has 8 performance cores and 4 energy efficiency cores. The performance core runs at about 3.4GHz, while the efficiency core operates at around 2.5GHz.

The GPU uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 architecture. It links to a separate GPU using 8 PCIe 4.0 lanes, providing 4.6TFLOPS of computing power.

It supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5x memory, PCIe 4.0 SSD, and UFS 4.0 flash memory. The NPU (Neural Processing Unit) boasts 45TOPS of computing power.

Other configurations include support for DirectX 12, Vulkan 1.3, OpenCL, and DirectML. The wireless network supports Wi-Fi 7. In terms of IO, the chip supports two USB 3.1 10Gbps ports and three USB 4 (Thunderbolt 4) ports that support DisplayPort 1.4a. Additionally, the chip’s display output can handle resolutions up to 5K+4K+4K.

It is equipped with a plug-in 5G modem, and it’s worth noting that competing products, such as the Apple M series, do not offer this functionality.

Qualcomm announced in March last year its intention to acquire CPU design company Nuvia for US$1.4 billion.

Qualcomm announced the 2023 Snapdragon Summit release date, scheduled for October 25th to 26th. The event is expected to reveal the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Snapdragon X Elite, and other flagship SOCs.

Additionally, on the 11th of this month, Qualcomm announced the continuation of the Snapdragon 8CX series to benchmark Intel Core i5 and Apple M series standard products. The company designed this series of chips for notebook computers, aiming to compete with Apple’s customized chip, Apple Silicon. These chips are based on the customized Oryon CPU core. Qualcomm has officially adopted its self-developed CPU architecture, moving away from using Arm’s Cortex public version CPU core for its PC flagship SOC.

Qualcomm predicts a PC industry turning point in 2024, thanks to the Snapdragon X computing platform, promising improved performance, AI capabilities, connectivity, and battery life.

The Snapdragon X-series platform draws on Qualcomm’s extensive experience in CPU, GPU, and NPU heterogeneous computing architectures. Utilizing the next-generation customized Qualcomm Oryon CPU, the Snapdragon X series will significantly improve performance and energy efficiency. Furthermore, its NPU will deliver an accelerated terminal-side user experience for the new era of generative AI.
