Huawei and Xiaomi Reach Global Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement

Today, Huawei and Xiaomi have announced a global patent cross-licensing agreement covering communication technologies, including 5G. Huawei’s Director of Intellectual Property Department, Fan Zhiyong, expressed his satisfaction with the license agreement, stating that it underscores the industry’s recognition of Huawei’s contributions to communication standards and bolsters their research investment in future mobile communication technology.

According to the “2023 Research Report on Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposals” published by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, Huawei leads in 5G standard essential patents. Huawei and Xiaomi hold the top position with their effective global patent families accounting for the largest share at 14.59%, while Qualcomm comes in second at 10.04%, and Samsung holds the third position at 8.80%.

It’s worth noting that as of 2022, Huawei possesses more than 120,000 valid authorized patents. In 2021/2022, it claimed the top position in patent authorizations from both the China National Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office. Additionally, in 2022, Huawei emerged as the company with the highest number of patent applications worldwide, as reported by China PCT International.

Regarding research and development, Huawei’s R&D expenditure surpassed 160 billion in 2022, with a total investment exceeding 970 billion over the past decade. These substantial R&D investments have propelled Huawei to a commanding lead across various fields.
