Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro With SIM Card Support Ahead of Launch

A recently surfaced entry in the IMEI database points to the arrival of a fresh Mi Watch labeled “M2233W1,” widely speculated to be the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro. This upcoming timepiece is expected to address the limitations in functionality observed in its predecessor, the Watch S2.

It’s worth highlighting that the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro takes a different route for achieving internet connectivity and calls. Instead of relying on eSIM technology, it offers direct support for traditional SIM cards.

While using a physical SIM card occupies more space within the device than the compact eSIM, this decision seems reasonable considering the current status of eSIM adoption in the local market. Notably, recent announcements by China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom revealed the suspension of dual-terminal eSIM services and standalone eSIM services for smartwatches in various regions. This has resulted in the inability of newly launched products to establish online calling capabilities.

Due to the existing state of the domestic eSIM sector, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom have jointly decided to suspend their eSIM-enabled watch and standalone eSIM services temporarily. This suspension is effective across all regions.

Xiaomi has identified a potential business opportunity in response to this development. The question is whether the market and users will adopt this change and bear the related expenses. Therefore, Xiaomi chooses to assess the situation before taking any significant actions.
