Insta360 One X2 VR Camera
One of the best 360-degree cameras we tested was the Insta360 One X launched a couple of years ago. We do not know anyone disappointed with the shooting performance this camera provides. However, everything changes and needs upgrades. When it comes to gadgets, it becomes even more obvious. The second-gen Insta360 One X2 is identical to its predecessor externally but inside, it’s completely upgraded.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably trying to decide if you want to buy it. While I do enjoy using the camera, I admit that it’s not perfect.
Appearance
- OLED touchscreen
- Slim body
As said, the Insta360 One X2 is similar to the previous model but it is slightly thicker. However, what is more, noteworthy is that, if the previous generation came with a black and white LCD screen, this one sports a color touchscreen. Because of the black and white screen, we were able to do only select operations via buttons. So we have had to use our mobile phones and a dedicated app to leverage its functionality.
OLED touchscreen has nothing in common with an LCD screen.
Fortunately, the Insta360 One X2 comes with an OLED color touchscreen. These three words make us think that it is a head higher than the previous generation model. For instance, the OLED material means that the content will be displayed way better under sunlight; we can do most of the operations via touch commands.
Battery
- 100+ mins
- New battery design
We understand that the previous generation didn’t use a color screen to save more power. But the company has upgraded the battery in this model, which now has 55% more power than its predecessor. For instance, the first-gen model was capable of lasting 45-60 minutes when taking 5.7K high-def videos. The Insta360 One X2 does the same operation but lasts 90-105 minutes.
2x times longer!
The design of the battery itself adopts a body battery cover. So the product’s camera itself has no battery cover. This not only adds a waterproof effect but also solves the problem of breaking the first-generation battery extraction belt.
Waterproof
- IP68 rating
One of the biggest shortcomings of the first generation of the Insta360 One X was that it had no waterproof rating. So you had to buy a waterproof shell separately. Otherwise, you couldn’t use it for diving. The company has solved this issue and this generation comes with an IP68 certification, which means you can immerse it into water up to 10 meters for 30 minutes. In other words, you don’t have to acquire additional accessories to make the Insta360 One X2 suitable for underwater shooting.
Note: if you like deeper diving, you have to acquire separate shells that support up to 45m water immersion.
Shooting performance
- Steady cam
- Video stabilization
The new model still supports up to 5.7K shooting. But the manufacturer didn’t upgrade this feature because currently mobile phones or camera hardware does not support 8K resolution shooting. On the other hand, 4K is more than enough. Maybe in the future, 8K will be a required resolution, but not now.
We also like the multi-view function. Thus, the camera can show the front and the back simultaneously.
Steady cam shooting mode
Many users have been waiting for this mode for a long time. It allows the camera to use a single lens to record videos like ordinary cameras. The 360 camera comes with two fish-eye lenses. The first-generation model was allowing us to shoot only 360 panoramic images. But now, we can record single-lens videos. If you still don’t get what this means – you can directly use the Insta360 One X2 as a general wide-angle action camera to shoot videos.
General mode
The Insta360 One X2 comes with an obvious hair color saturation upgrade. Generally talking, colors in this mode are richer and they represent the image more naturally.
Steady cam wide-angle movie mode
In this mode, the highest resolution could be 1440p at 50fps. Also, you can choose the 9:16 ratio, which is suitable for Facebook, or 16:9, which is suitable for YouTube. Moreover, you do not need additional steps to make it post-able – once recorded, you can post it on social media.
InstaPano extreme wide-angle mode
This is a new extreme wide-angle photo shooting mode. The camera uses a single lens to capture ultra-wide-angle photos. Plus, in this mode, you can also choose between “standard wide-angle mode” and “HDR wide-angle mode”. It depends on the ambient light source.
Noise reduction
Once using Pureshot noise reduction mode at night, the details and brightness will be improved a lot. This is ideal for low-light shooting.
HDR
This model differs from the previous models’ HDR mode. The Insta360 One X2 uses nine shots with different EV values for the HDR synthesis effect. That’s why it shows a more high dynamic range of bright and dark details.
Video stabilization
This camera comes with a FlowState anti-shake technology, which is capable of maintaining excellent picture stability in any dynamic situation.
Microphones
Our protagonist comes with four built-in directional microphones. Thus, it can pick up every sound regardless of its source and reach an effect of stereo sound (Spatial Audio). Plus, there is a microphone for resisting the wind-cut problem, minimizing noise, and improving the overall sound quality.
Conclusion
The Insta360 One X2 is an ideal choice for those who are going to buy a 360-degree camera. It supports panorama and general two-in-one shooting function, has a slim camera design, large battery, OLED touchscreen, IP68 waterproof rating, improved image and sound quality, and many more.
